Howard-less Mavs beat banged-up Rockets (AP)

Howard, the Mavs' second-leading scorer, was inactive because of a left ankle injury.
Yao out with sore foot
Houston Rockets center Yao Ming will sit out Wednesday's game against the Dallas Mavericks with a sore left foot. The team said Yao is being held out "for precautionary reasons" after leaving Monday's game at Oklahoma City with an apparent left ankle injury. Yao underwent tests on Tuesday that revealed no structural damage. Yao broke his left foot last February and missed the final 26 games of the regular season. He had surgery and said he was fully recovered when training camp began.img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Foxsports/rss/NBA/~4/458956736" height="1" width="1"/

Mavs win easily in wake of Cuban charges (AP)
Mark Cuban yelled and cheered from his courtside seat during the game, then high-fived his players after it was over. SEC charge could hurt Cuban's reputation (AP)
Since buying the Dallas Mavericks eight years ago, Mark Cuban has turned the team around and made himself one of the most visible owners in pro sports. Along the way, he's picked up his share of critics. Some say he's a nuisance to the NBA, with more than $1 million in fines held up as evidence. Some Mavs fan say his constant baiting of officials merely leads to more calls against the team.

We're both continuing to get information and looking forward to further dialogue." Nelson said there has not been a snag, just ongoing negotiations.

Johnson proud of tenure with Mavericks (AP)
Don Nelson's departure from the Dallas Mavericks was so messy that, more than three years later, he's still fighting Mark Cuban for money he insists he's owed. New Orleans won the Southwest Division crown and leads Dallas 3-1 in the first round of the playoffs entering Game 5 Tuesday night. This is the first time Scott has won the Red Auerbach Trophy in eight seasons as a coach, four with the New Jersey Nets and the past four with the Hornets.

Dallas point guard Jason Kidd was ejected for committing a flagrant foul on Jannero Pargo during the fourth quarter of Game 4 on Sunday night against the New Orleans Hornets. Kidd's status for Game 5 on Tuesday may be in jeopardy. Kidd was given a flagrant 2 -- which results in an immediate ejection and the NBA can review the play to determine whether a suspension is warranted.

Jannero Pargo's reaction to Jason Kidd's flagrant foul summed up the growth of the Hornets' confidence as they took a 3-1 lead in their first-round playoff series with the Dallas Mavericks. NBA opts not to suspend Kidd for flagrant foul
Jason Kidd won't be suspended for his flagrant foul on New Orleans' Jannero Pargo, meaning the Mavericks will have their starting point guard Tuesday night when they try to avoid elimination Tuesday night in Game 5. Kidd's takedown of Pargo drew an automatic ejection. The NBA reviewed the play Monday and determined further punishment wasn't necessary, league spokesman Tim Frank said. The play came with 7:16 left in the Hornets' 97-84 victory Sunday. Dallas trails 3-1 in the first-round series.

West let out his pent-up frustration over a poor Game 3 with a determined effort in Game 4, scoring 10 of his 24 points in a quick stretch early in the second half to help the New Orleans Hornets pull away for a 97-84 victory Sunday and a 3-1 lead in the first-round series.
Nowitzki looks to help Mavs even series (AP)
Dirk Nowitzki heard plenty of criticism after he struggled in the first round of the playoffs last season. When the Mavericks needed a big game Friday to avoid a 3-0 deficit, Nowitzki responded with the type of performance he had in the 2006 postseason. The 2007 MVP scored 32 points, grabbed 19 rebounds and handed out six assists in Dallas' 97-87 victory over New Orleans.

And then it came out. Things sure were different now that he and the Hornets were on the road -- and the Mavs were at home.

Mavs' Howard admits pot usage on radio (AP)
Hours before the Dallas Mavericks' biggest game of the year, forward Josh Howard went on the radio Friday to talk about something else -- his fondness for marijuana. Paul torching Mavs as Dwyane, Baron did (AP)
Dwyane Wade turned himself into a superstar by dominating the Dallas Mavericks in the 2006 NBA finals. Then Baron Davis made one terrific play after another while blistering the Mavs in the first round of last year's playoffs. Now, it's Chris Paul's turn. Fortunate enough to draw the reputation-making Mavericks in the first playoff series of his career, Paul is certainly picking up where Wade and...
Mavericks figure things can't get worse (AP)
Dirk Nowitzki has it all figured out. To snap out of their funk, and start climbing out of an 0-2 hole against the New Orleans Hornets, all the Dallas Mavericks have to do is get on the court Friday night in front of their home fans. OK, he acknowledged, they also need to "play in attack mode," which means getting more physical on both ends of the court.
Paul helps Hornets rip Mavs for 2-0 lead (AP)
Dirk Nowitzki skipped out to the perimeter, joining Jason Kidd as they attempted to trap Chris Paul. Paul promptly let them know they were in for long night, knifing into the lane on the dribble and dropping in a pretty floater. As brilliant as Paul was in his playoff debut last weekend, his encore was better.
Hornets' Scott trusts defense vs. Mavs (AP)
Byron Scott found himself awake at 5 a.m. last week, wondering if he should make defensive changes to deal with a dynamic Dallas attack that gave the Hornets fits in both teams' regular season finale. "Once I finally got up, I told myself, 'We're going to do what we do. We've been one of the top five teams in the league in the defensive end, so why change?"' Scott recalled on Monday.
Mavs focus on Paul after Game 1 loss (AP)
With a quick behind-the-back dribble, Chris Paul darted left. Jason Kidd and Jason Terry, who had converged in the back court in an effort to trap the Hornets' playmaker extraordinaire, nearly fell over each other as Paul streaked into the open court. And there lies the problem for Dallas Mavericks coach Avery Johnson.

Hornets brace for series with Mavericks (AP)
A little smirk crept across Tyson Chandler's face. The subject was the Dallas Mavericks' comments this week that they were pleased to be facing the New Orleans Hornets in the opening round of the NBA playoffs, rather than the top-seeded Los Angeles Lakers. "They wanted us. They got us now, and good for them," said Chandler, the Hornets' feisty, 7-foot-1 center.
Seattle still trying to save SuperSonics (AP)
The supposedly obsolete arena is dark. After enduring billionaire power plays, broken promises and the team's worst season ever, Seattle is on the brink of losing its first big-time sports franchise. On Friday, NBA owners are set to approve the SuperSonics' move to Oklahoma City. The last two votes on moves -- the Hornets from Charlotte to New Orleans and the Grizzlies from Vancouver to Memphis --...
Mavs like position heading to playoffs (AP)
There are a few significant things the Dallas Mavericks don't have to worry about going into the playoffs this time. No pressure trying to live up to being the No. 1 seed, like last season when the Mavericks became the only top seed eliminated in a best-of-seven first-round series -- a year after they lost in the NBA finals.
Kidd ensures Mavs-Hornets in 1st round (AP)
Jason Kidd had the 100th triple-double of his career and sparked a 30-8 stretch that sent the Dallas Mavericks past the New Orleans Hornets, 111-98 Wednesday night, and set up a first-round showdown between these teams. Supposed Sonics farewell turns into love-fest
For one, perhaps final, night, optimism trumped doom in Seattle. If this really was the last time the SuperSonics played in this city, nobody convinced the more than 15,000 fans who showed up to watch their beloved team rally to beat the Dallas Mavericks 99-95 on Sunday night. They chanted "Save our Sonics!" and had a far less gracious chant for Sonics owner Clay Bennett.

Standing at midcourt, hearing his home fans roar as they never have during his rookie season, Kevin Durant wore a giddy smile, lifting his arms and asking for more from the appreciative crowd.
