Light up one more for Red. Some fans wore green Celtics jerseys with the name "AUERBACH" in white capital letters on the back. When the Boston Celtics built a new practice facility, they surrounded the court with their 16 NBA championship banners and left a blank space for No. 17. Big Three takes home title; Pierce wins MVP
It's the reason Paul Pierce stuck around when the losses mounted and the end was far from clear. The reason Ray Allen was acquired as a draft-day consolation prize. And the reason Kevin Garnett agreed to leave the only pro team he'd ever known. The Big Three has won the Big One. The Boston Celtics rode their three All-Stars to their 17th championship on Tuesday night, blowing by the Los Angeles Lakers with a stunning show of second-quarter scoring to win 131-92 in Game 6 of the NBA finals.

The reason: "health issues" involving one of his three children. Perkins watched Game 5 from the bench with a shoulder injury. His availability for Game 6 will be a game-time decision.

Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo also aggravated his sprained left ankle, and star forward Paul Pierce rolled his right ankle in Game 4, but the captain stayed in the game. Both are day to day.

Kobe, Lakers suffer gutting loss in Game 4
Even Kobe Bryant couldn't save the Los Angeles Lakers, who find themselves on the brink of elimination after one of the biggest collapses in NBA finals history. The Lakers led Boston by as many as 24 points in the second quarter and by 20 midway through the third before the Celtics rallied for a 97-91 victory Thursday night and a 3-1 series lead. No team has ever come back from such a deficit in the finals. "We let a huge opportunity slip away," Bryant said.

Ref's charges of conspiracy linger over NBA finals
If Tim Donaghy's latest allegations are true, Kobe Bryant won his last championship with the help of an NBA conspiracy. And Scot Pollard is still ringless because some guys in suits determined it would be that way. Even with Bryant chasing another title in a marquee NBA finals matchup between the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics, the league still can't escape the Donaghy mess, now nearly a year after learning the former referee bet on games he officiated.
Both teams look forward to better Game 4 outing
Maybe the NBA finals should book an appointment with one of Southern California's finest plastic surgeons. After a shabby, sluggish Game 3, featuring enough air balls and air-headed plays for seven games, the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers could use a few nips, tucks and lifts. Another good night's sleep or afternoon nap might help, too. "It wasn't the prettiest game," said Celtics center Kevin Garnett, who missed two dunks and seems to have left his shooting touch back in May.

Lakers head home in need of wins
Home better be sweet for the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 3 of the NBA finals or they'll be faced with a challenge that's never been met. Yep, they're in a must-win situation, any way you cut it. After their Kobe Bryant-led fourth-quarter comeback from a 24-point deficit fell just short Sunday night, the Lakers headed home from Boston trailing the Celtics 2-0 and aware that an NBA team has never recovered from a 3-0 deficit to win a best-of-seven series.
Lakers-Celtics has LA cheering again (AP)
It's almost summer in Southern California and the car antennas are in full bloom with purple and gold. That can mean but one thing: the Los Angeles Lakers are in the hunt for an NBA title. Lakers fans may appear to be a laid-back bunch much of the year, but that changes when the team lands in the NBA finals -- especially against the Boston Celtics.
Ratings up for Game 2 of Lakers-Celtics finals
Television ratings for the NBA finals are up big from last season but falling short of the last time the Lakers were involved. Game 2 on Sunday drew an 8.5 fast national rating on ABC, the network said Monday. That's an increase of 52 percent from the 5.6 last year for the Spurs-Cavaliers series. But the Boston Celtics' 108-102 win over Los Angeles didn't come close to the Game 2 rating during the Lakers' previous finals appearance in 2004.

Winning Celtics have Boston green again (AP)
For Brian Shaw, these were the true sights and sounds of Boston. Celtics flags everywhere. Fans shouting at the Lakers' bus, most of them decked out in green. Even the driver taking the team to the arena was wearing a Celtics hat. That was missing in recent years, and so were wins on the basketball court.

Big moments have defined the Lakers-Celtics blood feud, and in their first get together in 21 years, a kid from Los Angeles gave Boston one to remember. Paul Pierce, who used to sneak into Lakers games as a youngster, came bounding out of the tunnel from the locker room after leaving with an injured knee and led the Celtics to a tense 98-88 victory over Los Angeles on Thursday night in Game 1 of...

NBA finals veteran Derek Fisher and newcomer Pau Gasol helped Los Angeles overcome Kobe Bryant's quiet start, and the Lakers led the Boston Celtics 51-46 at halftime Thursday night in the renewal of the league's greatest rivalry. Fisher scored 13 points and Gasol added 12 for Los Angeles, which was shooting 50 percent against the team that held opponents to the lowest field goal percentage during...
Lakers, Celtics set for finals reunion (AP)
They're like long, lost fraternity brothers who left college with bad haircuts and wearing those thigh-hugging short shorts that were fashionable during the Reagan years. They drifted to opposite coasts and barely kept in touch. Well, they've reconnected and are getting back together. The Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers are going to a reunion in a place they both know so well -- the NBA...

Kareem anticipates Lakers-Celtics series (AP)
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar rooted for the Celtics during his high school days in New York. Honest. He would later be involved in one of the most intense rivalries in sports, going against Boston three times in the NBA finals as a Lakers star in the 1980s. Now, that's simply a part of his past. "I saw my first Celtics-Lakers rivalry game in 1969," Abdul-Jabbar recalled Sunday, referring to a matchup in the...
Many factors in Celtics' resurgence (AP)
This is not how the Boston Celtics planned to get back to the NBA finals. The league's luckiest franchise saw its luck run out -- again -- in the draft lottery last year, coming up with the worst possible pick and no shot at the megastars slotted 1-2. What the Celtics couldn't know at the time was that it was the best thing that could have happened.
