The Hawks broke open the game in the third quarter by shooting 17 of 23 from the field while scoring a season-high 38 points.

Joe Johnson scored 34 points and Josh Smith had a season-high 33 points and 13 rebounds for the Hawks, who had a chance to win it at the buzzer.

Jamal Crawford banked in a 3-pointer with 5.7 seconds left to cap a brilliant second half, leading the Atlanta Hawks to an 88-84 victory over the Orlando Magic on Friday night and a 2-1 lead in their Eastern Conference playoff series. The Hawks led most of the game, but things got close and testy in the final minutes.

Dwight Howard had 33 points and 19 rebounds, Jameer Nelson added 13 points and eight rebounds and the Orlando Magic held off the Atlanta Hawks 88-82 on Tuesday night. The Magic evened the best-of-seven series, with Game 3 Friday night in Atlanta. Orlando used a 10-1 run to close the third quarter to take an 11-point lead into the fourth and fought off a late Atlanta charge down the stretch.

Al Horford capped his 35th double-double with a key tip-in with 7.9 seconds remaining and the Atlanta Hawks surged in the fourth quarter to beat the travel-weary Boston Celtics 88-83 on Friday night. The Hawks' lead was only three points when Horford tipped in a miss by Joe Johnson. Jamal Crawford had 20 points and Johnson had 19 despite making only 4 of 20 shots from the field.

Dirk Nowitzki scored 19 points, Jason Terry added 18 points and a season-high 11 assists, and the Dallas Mavericks beat the Atlanta Hawks 102-91 on Saturday night. Jason Kidd had 12 points and eight rebounds, and Tyson Chandler also had 12 points for the Mavericks, who had seven double-figure scorers.

Al Horford had 24 points to lead nine scorers in double figures and the Atlanta Hawks enjoyed their best offensive night in 16 years to beat the slumping Toronto Raptors 146-115 on Wednesday night. The Hawks had their highest-scoring game since Jan. 30, 1993, when they beat Philadelphia 149-123. They had nine players in double figures for the first time since Dec.

Rookie Jeff Teague had 17 points and seven assists, leading the Atlanta Hawks to a 107-90 victory over the Charlotte in a preseason game Monday night that saw Bobcats coach Larry Brown escorted off the court by security after being ejected. Hawks ink 14-year veteran power forward Smith
Free agent forward Joe Smith is the Atlanta Hawks' free-agent answer to the team's lack of inside depth. The Hawks have signed Smith, a 14-year veteran and unrestricted free agent. The 6-foot-10, 225-pound Smith will join center Zaza Pachulia as the top inside backups behind starters Al Horford and Josh Smith for the Hawks, who advanced to the second round of the playoffs last season. Terms of the deal were not released on Tuesday.

Hawks announce deals with Bibby, Pachulia
The Atlanta Hawks are hustling to keep pace with the Eastern Conference's elite teams. The Hawks, who traded for guard Jamal Crawford last month, on Monday announced they have re-signed unrestricted free agents Mike Bibby and Zaza Pachulia. The Hawks finished the 2008-09 regular season as the No. 4 team in the conference. Coach Mike Woodson said moves made by Eastern Conference powers Boston, Orlando and Cleveland put pressure on the Hawks to also be active this offseason.

Sometimes Manu Ginobili enjoys the thought of coming off the bench. It looks as if Wednesday was one of those nights. Ginobili scored 27 points in a return to his sixth-man role to help the San Antonio Spurs beat Atlanta 95-89 for their fourth straight victory. Ginobili, the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year last season, scored 14 points in the fourth quarter.

Grant Hill made an 18-foot jump shot with 5.6 seconds left and the Phoenix Suns beat the Atlanta Hawks 102-100 in a preseason game Wednesday night. "I thought it was going to be 120 or something the way it was in the first half," Suns coach Terry Porter said of the game which Phoenix led 59-58 at halftime.




Hawks C Pachulia aches for homeland (AP)
While war raged in his homeland, Zaza Pachulia ached from afar. He was a Georgian stuck in American Georgia, unable to return to his native country after the Russians invaded over the summer. "My mom, cousins, grandparents, friends ... they're all back there," said Pachulia, the Atlanta Hawks' rugged center.
