Veteran center Tony Battie signs with Philadelphia 76ers
The Philadelphia 76ers have signed free-agent center Tony Battie.

The Philadelphia 76ers have signed free-agent center Tony Battie. Team president Ed Stafanski said Wednesday that the 76ers want Battie to provide frontcourt depth and a "veteran presence" for younger players. Terms of his contract were not disclosed. The 6-foot-11 Battie has averaged 6.4 points and 5.3 rebounds over 12 NBA seasons.

Magic's Carter sidelined with ankle injury
Orlando Magic guard Vince Carter was sidelined against the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday night with a sprained left ankle. Carter was first injured Friday against New Jersey. Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said Carter aggravated the ankle again Tuesday night versus Detroit. Carter's status is day to day. The 32-year-old guard was Orlando's biggest free agent splash this summer. The Magic acquired Carter from New Jersey in a trade that sent Courtney Lee, Rafer Alston and Tony Battie to the Nets.

Rashard Lewis had 17 points and Jameer Nelson scored 16 to help the Orlando Magic overcome a big game from Dwyane Wade and beat the Miami Heat, 86-76 Friday night. Dwight Howard, the leader in All-Star balloting, added 15 points and 15 rebounds for the Magic, who extended their regular-season winning streak to 10 straight over their instate rivals.

Jameer Nelson scored 22 points and had seven assists to help the Orlando Magic rout the Golden State Warriors 113-81 on Monday night. Nelson, named NBA Player of the Week for the first time in his career earlier on Monday, was 9-for-9 from the field -- including hitting four 3-pointers. Magic beat 76ers for third straight win (AP)
Hedo Turkoglu and Rashard Lewis scored 20 points apiece and the Orlando Magic overcame Dwight Howard's foul trouble to beat the Philadelphia 76ers 98-88 on Thursday night. With All-Star center Howard limited to only four minutes in the first half, the Magic got strong performances from Tony Battie and Lewis, who picked up the rebounding slack as Orlando won its third straight game.

Dwight Howard scored 20 points to lead the Orlando Magic to a 118-80 preseason rout of the Charlotte Bobcats on Wednesday night. Rashard Lewis had 17 points to lead three other Magic players in double figures as Orlando spoiled the debut of new Bobcats coach Larry Brown. Charlotte trailed by 31 points after only one quarter, and Orlando's lead grew to as much as 44 in the fourth quarter.

Orlando Magic forward Tony Battie will undergo rotator cuff surgery likely to end his season, the team said Wednesday. He partially tore a ligament a few weeks ago in a pickup game. He had an arm on center Dwight Howard as Howard backed toward the bucket and felt the shoulder give. Battie knew surgery was the likely option after seeing two doctors just before training camp. He had been a lineup fixture, one of a dozen players in the league to start all 82 games two years ago.
