Bobcats coach Brown hires 3 assistants (AP)
Charlotte Bobcats coach Larry Brown is pursuing his former college teammate, Doug Moe, to join his new coaching staff. The Bobcats announced Wednesday that Brown hired Dave Hanners as an assistant and retained Phil Ford and Jeff Capel from former coach Sam Vincent's staff. Brown indicated he was trying to get Moe to agree to return to the bench.

Larry Brown wanted a chance to resurrect his vagabond, Hall of Fame coaching career. Michael Jordan needed a veteran teacher and a big hire to rescue his sinking reputation as an NBA executive. The two former North Carolina players teamed up Tuesday when Jordan introduced Brown as coach of the Charlotte Bobcats - his ninth NBA job. The 67-year-old Brown replaces Sam Vincent, whom Jordan hired last year despite no NBA head coaching experience.

The Charlotte Bobcats have fired coach Sam Vincent after one season. The team announced the move Saturday. The fourth-year franchise had hoped to make the playoffs for the first time this season. But the Bobcats went 32-50, and that put Vincent's job in jeopardy. Part-owner Michael Jordan had taken a gamble in hiring Vincent. Vincent had never been an NBA head coach and had spent just one year in the league as an assistant.

Wallace has been sidelined since being knocked unconscious in a game Feb. 22. "He's been working out, and he's been on the floor. Did some up-and-down running, got a little winded," Charlotte coach Sam Vincent said before Saturday night's game against the Washington Wizards.

Wallace could return from concussion soon
Charlotte Bobcats forward Gerald Wallace could return from his fourth concussion in four years as soon as next week. Coach Sam Vincent said Wednesday that Wallace has been doing some light shooting and running over the past couple of days. Vincent expects Wallace will be cleared to practice by the end of the week and said a target date for his return is March 12 at Dallas. "He's feeling a lot better. The headaches are gone," Vincent said.

The Charlotte Bobcats waived guard Jeff McInnis on Friday. The team provided no explanation for the decision. McInnis started 26 of the 54 games he played this season, averaging 4.5 points and 4.1 assists. McInnis was criticized by coach Sam Vincent after a loss to Philadelphia a month ago, leading to a testy exchange between the two.

Charlotte coach Sam Vincent said he expected Wallace to be out about a week. The forward is averaging 21.2 points and 6.2 rebounds this season.

Bobcats send rookie Davidson to D-league
The Charlotte Bobcats assigned rookie forward Jermareo Davidson to Sioux Falls of the NBA Development League on Thursday. Davidson, a second-round pick in the draft, has played in only 16 of the team's 42 games, averaging 2.7 points and 1.5 rebounds. He's expected to play in Sioux Falls' game on Friday. The Charlotte Bobcats finally addressed their biggest need Friday night by acquiring big man Nazr Mohammed. The timing of the trade, though, left the Bobcats as no match for one of the league's top centers. Dwight Howard had 33 points and 18 rebounds and the Orlando Magic beat the undermanned Bobcats 103-87 on Friday night to snap a three-game losing streak.




Brezec questionable with swollen eye
Charlotte center Primoz Brezec is questionable for Monday's game against Portland because he needed four stitches near his left eye after colliding with an assistant coach in practice. The 7-foot-1 Brezec and Paul Mokeski bumped heads while working on a drill Sunday, the team said. His eye was nearly swollen shut during Monday's shootaround. Coach Sam Vincent said Ryan Hollins would start if Brezec can't play. Brezec, who started all nine games for Charlotte (5-4), is averaging 2.0 points, 1.

Diesel leaves early as Heat lose to 'Cats
Gerald Wallace scored 18 points to lead four players in double figures, and the Charlotte Bobcats beat the Miami Heat 92-76 Saturday night. Matt Carroll added 17 points, Raymond Felton scored 13, Adam Morrison had 10 points and Emeka Okafor pulled down nine rebounds for the Bobcats (1-2), who gave Sam Vincent his first win as an NBA head coach. Daequan Cook scored 10 points to lead the Heat (0-4), who gave up 30 points off turnovers.

May to have microfracture surgery, out year
Charlotte Bobcats forward Sean May will miss the season after deciding to undergo microfracture surgery on his troublesome right knee. May, who saw two knee specialists this week, will have the surgery Tuesday in New York. Recovery time will take six to 12 months. "Obviously this is a terrible blow for our basketball team and another setback for Sean," Bobcats coach Sam Vincent said Friday. "We want what's best for him, and unfortunately that requires surgery.

May's agenda after that is unknown, as his two-year struggle to get healthy seems without end. First-year coach Sam Vincent had no timetable for May's return.
