Al Horford scored 20 points and the Atlanta Hawks beat the Memphis Grizzlies 112-109 on Wednesday night after learning star Joe Johnson will have elbow surgery and miss four to six weeks. The Hawks had six players score in double figures, including a season-high 16 points off the bench by Josh Powell, to overcome the loss of Johnson, the team's four-time All-Star and top scorer.

The Los Angeles Lakers signed free-agent forward Josh Powell on Thursday. Terms of the contract weren't released. The 6-foot-9 Powell, a three-year NBA veteran, spent last season with the Los Angeles Clippers, averaging 5.5 points and 5.2 rebounds in 64 games.
