An unhappy Gilbert Arenas learned Sunday night that he had not been cleared to play by Washington Wizards team doctors, dashing his hopes of returning in the nationally televised game against the Detroit Pistons - or anytime soon. Arenas took part in the shootaround Sunday morning and was so confident that he would be in uniform against the Pistons that he didn't bring proper attire to sit on the bench as an injured player.

Washington Wizards' Antawn Jamison, left, is guarded by New York Knicks' Quentin Richardson (23) during the second half of an NBA basketball game in Washington, in this Feb. 19, 2008 file photo. For some strange reason, a slumping team missing its two best players felt it simply go through the motions and win its first game after the All-Star break. If the Washington Wizards aren't careful, that attitude will nonchalant them right out of the playoff race.

Forget for a moment all the points, rebounds, steals and assists that Gilbert Arenas and Caron Butler would provide if they were on the floor. The Washington Wizards also need their fire. Those who are healthy enough to play had the audacity to think they could just show up and beat another struggling team, the New York Knicks, in the first game after the All-Star break.
