Webber ends comeback attempt, retires from NBA
Chris Webber announced his retirement from the NBA on Wednesday, bowing to a knee injury that cut short his comeback attempt with the Golden State Warriors. "I really didn't want to rehab and come back this season because I don't think that was possible," Webber said. "Plus, because the way the team is playing, the chemistry is great with these guys, they're on a roll. I feel like they're going to win, they have a great chance to go very far in the playoffs.

Biedrins back for Warriors after appendectomy
Golden State center Andris Biedrins returned to the Warriors' lineup Friday night against the Miami Heat after missing six games following an appendectomy. Biedrins had been sidelined since the Feb. 21 surgery. "I'm going to have to watch his stamina," Warriors coach Don Nelson said. "But it's not like he's going to lose his shooting touch from 18 feet." Meanwhile, forward Chris Webber was inactive for the third straight game with a sore left knee.

Warriors coach Don Nelson said Webber, who left a win Sunday over Portland after eight minutes, plans to stay in Atlanta to rehab and could sit out the final three games of Golden State's current road trip. Results of an MRI taken Monday in Oakland were negative. Matt Barnes started in place of Webber, a 14th-year center-forward who is averaging 3.9 points and 3.6 rebounds in nine games.

Szczerbiak's mistake allows Suns to win (AP)

Phoenix Suns guard Steve Nash, center, is surrounded by Seattle SuperSonics' Earl Watson, rear, Chris Wilcox, right, and Kevin Durant, left, as they try to foul him to stop the clock during the fourth quarter of an NBA basketball game Friday, Feb. 8, 2008 in Phoenix. The Suns won 103-99.

Wally Szczerbiak took the ball out of bounds, found no one open, and called timeout. Oops. His team had no timeouts left. That mistake with 15.1 seconds to play allowed the Phoenix Suns to escape with a 103-99 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics on Friday night. "Now I know how Chris Webber felt in the NCAA tournament," Szczerbiak said, recalling that long-ago error that helped cost Michigan the...

Chicago Bulls' Adrian Griffin, right, passes from the floor away from Golden State Warriors' Stephen Jackson during the second half of a basketball game Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008, in Oakland, Calif. Chicago won, 114-108.

Not even Chris Webber could fix the problems that bedeviled the Golden State Warriors in his first game back. The veteran forward wasn't even sure he could identify what went so terribly wrong in the Chicago Bulls' improbable victory. He left that diagnosis to his teammates and coaches, who all pointed out the gaping defensive void that the Bulls walked through to victory.

The way Andris Biedrins grabbed every rebound that came his direction, it didn't look as if the Golden State Warriors needed any more help on the inside. Coach Don Nelson knows that's not the case, which is why he's still interested in putting his old feud with Chris Webber to rest and bringing the free agent forward back to Golden State.
