Wade sorry for 'World Trade' comment (AP)
Dwyane Wade is apologizing for using the words "World Trade" while answering a question about the upcoming Miami Heat season. Wade used the phrase Sunday before the annual charity basketball game he co-hosts with Alonzo Mourning. While giving a answer about how the team could react to a losing streak this coming season, Wade said, referring to reporters, "You all are going to make it...

Mourning wants more done to help Haiti (AP)
Alonzo Mourning is angry, just as he famously was at times during his playing days. The 6-foot-10 former Miami Heat star is standing on the edge of the airport in Port-au-Prince, Haiti's earthquake-ravaged capital. The temperature is 93 degrees, humidity making it feel like 111. He's overlooking a tent city serving as a hospital, housing some of Haiti's sick, some of their dying, some of...

Alonzo Mourning and Erik Spoelstra of the Miami Heat, along with Rudy Gay of the Memphis Grizzlies, were among those joining an envoy of relief workers going to Haiti. Everywhere Philadelphia 76ers center Samuel Dalembert looked, he saw pain he can't forget. The NBA's only Haitian-born player arrived in his home country Tuesday with former NBA star Alonzo Mourning as part of Project MediShare. He watched a leg amputation and people having operations on flimsy kitchen tables.

In a statement first released to The Associated Press, Mourning says he is confident the athletes "can...

Heat will retire Hardaway's No. 10
The Miami Heat will retire former guard Tim Hardaway's No. 10 jersey in a ceremony Oct. 28, immediately prior to the season-opener against the New York Knicks. It will be the second jersey retired in Heat history: Alonzo Mourning's No. 33 went to the rafters last season. Heat president Pat Riley said Hardaway is part of the "taproot and foundation for what we hope to be a long tradition of success here in Miami." Hardaway played 13 NBA seasons, nearly six of those with the Heat.

Wade gets contract extension offer from Heat
The Miami Heat didn't wait long to announce the NBA's worst-kept secret: They want to keep Dwyane Wade. The reigning NBA scoring champion said he received a text from Heat president Pat Riley regarding a contract extension shortly after midnight Sunday, the first day the team could make such an offer. Wade said he will have more formal talks with the team later this summer. "There's no rush," he said Sunday night, before he and Alonzo Mourning hosted a charity basketball game in Miami.

Mourning still unsure on return to Heat (AP)
Alonzo Mourning is sprinting, jumping and dunking. That doesn't mean the former All-Star will soon be playing. The former and perhaps future Miami Heat center said Saturday he still doesn't know if he can return to the rigors of the NBA, even though his recovery from devastating knee and leg injuries 13 months ago is going far better than any doctor could originally imagine.

Vegas casino says lawsuit against NBA was mistake
A luxury casino on the Las Vegas Strip said Sunday the NBA should not have been included in a $50,000 lawsuit filed this month for an unpaid convention bill from 2007 All-Star Week. Casino spokeswoman Jennifer Dunne of the Wynn Las Vegas said the lawsuit seeking payment from the NBA and a player's charity should have only been filed against Alonzo Mourning Charities, Inc., not against NBA Entertainment and NBA Properties.

Mourning says return still a possibility
For months, Alonzo Mourning insisted that this season would be his last in the NBA. Unless, of course, it isn't. Mourning, whose season ended when he suffered severe knee and leg injuries in a game last December, said Monday that if his body gets healthy, he'd like to come back and play one more season before finally calling it a career. "I want to come back and play another year," Mourning said, while appearing at Miami Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor's charity golf event.

New coach Spoelstra climbed Heat ladder (AP)

In this Nov. 21, 2007 file photo, Miami Heat assistant coach Erik Spoelstra, left, watches his team from the bench with other members of his team, from left, Jason Williams, Udonis Haslem, and Alonzo Mourning, during the fourth quarter of an NBA basketball game against the Atlanta Hawks in Miami. Spoelstra will replace Riley on the Heat bench, making the 37-year-old the youngest current head coach in the NBA.

Erik Spoelstra's tenure with the Miami Heat nearly ended after just a few months when Pat Riley arrived in 1995. Spoelstra was settling in as Miami's new video coordinator in 1995 when the Heat hired Riley as coach and president. Riley had final say over everything, including staff, and wanted someone he already knew to manage that part of the team's operation.

Under-the-weather Wade won't face Magic
Things keep getting worse for the reeling Miami Heat. All-Star guard Dwyane Wade is still suffering from flu-like symptoms and did not fly Wednesday with the Heat for their game against the Southeast Division-leading Orlando Magic. Starting forward Udonis Haslem (sprained left ankle) also didn't make the trip with Miami, which is already playing without injured centers Shaquille O'Neal and Alonzo Mourning.

Heat end 15-game skid, talk playoffs (AP)
Only in the Eastern Conference could this notion seem anything but crazy. The Miami Heat dropped 15 consecutive games, lost centers Alonzo Mourning and Shaquille O'Neal to injuries, plunged to the second-worst record in the NBA and spent the last month as a punchline for pundits. So, one win later, they're talking playoffs.

Mourning has surgery on torn ligament
The notion of not seeing Alonzo Mourning play basketball again is a difficult one for the Miami Heat to accept. Mourning had surgery Thursday to repair a torn patellar tendon in his right knee and a quadriceps tear in the same leg. The injury, which he suffered Wednesday night in Miami's overtime loss at the Atlanta Hawks, will almost certainly keep Mourning sidelined for the remainder of the season.

Heat say they can turn poor start around (AP)
Pat Riley stressed the need for faith. Dwyane Wade talked about resolve. Alonzo Mourning reiterated his confidence. Say this for the Miami Heat: Even at 6-16, they emerged from practice Friday still willing to believe. So far this year, the Heat have endured dissension, roster moves that didn't work as planned, injuries, frustration and a simple inability to close teams out in crucial moments.

Davis, Warriors wear down Heat 120-113 (AP)

Miami Heat's Alonzo Mourning (33) blocks the shot of Golden State Warriors' Stephen Jackson, right, during the first half of an NBA basketball game Friday, Dec. 7, 2007, in Oakland, Calif.

Baron Davis scored 13 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter and the Golden State Warriors wore down the tired Miami Heat before rallying to their 11th win in 13 games, 120-113 Friday night. Miami led almost the entire way even though the game was played at Golden State's preferred up-tempo pace. But the frenetic pace appeared to get to the Heat late on the back end of back-to-back games.
